Third-grade students at Hampstead Elementary School know about epilepsy. Many have even seen their peers, Hannah Sichelstiel and Tommy Silverman, have seizures.
The school community has recognized Hannah and Tommy for who they are and not for their disorder, according to Hannah’s mother, Lisa Sichelstiel. Their classmates even decorated Hannah’s locker with deep purple and lavender butterflies in honor of Epilepsy Awareness Day.
As a way to thank the students, Sichelstiel decided last year to observe Epilepsy Awareness Day on March 26 for students in Tommy and Hannah’s grade.
